tapestry of dreams

Tapestry of Dreams was originally planned as the “official” launch of the Beautiful Life Project.  I (Heather), together with my talented friend, Ziya - was planning a one-of-a-kind production in November where we would visually tell the inspiring stories of women who, in spite of their tragic and challenging circumstances, have passionately pursued their wildest dreams - and have become world-changers as a result.  These stories were going to be told using film, original music, dance, gorgeous costumes and multi-media.  We wanted it to be MORE than a night of good entertainment, we wanted to inspire and challenge others to follow their dreams - no matter how wild!

And so... we set about planning this enormous project with great gusto!  We booked a fantastic new theatre in Joburg, and we were in the midst of putting together our team when....

Roz Thomas of Amangwe Zulu Crafts, based in Winterton, contacted me out of the blue with a dream she’d had... an idea that just wouldn’t go away.

Her idea involved a unique fashion show... showcasing the incredible beading / embroidery / sewing abilities of the women in rural Kwazulu Natal.  Women who support families of AIDS orphans with the small amount of money they earn from their creative handiwork.  Women who could really do with some support from the rest of us!

These designs would, in turn, be modeled by young women from the rural KZN community.  Some have HIV/AIDS.  Some are supporting AIDS orphans.  Some are involved in home-based “hospice care” for those dying alone of the disease.  All have powerful, poignant stories.

Roz wanted all proceeds of such a fashion show to go towards supporting Isibani, a community centre in Winterton founded and run by an amazing woman:  Sofi Cogley.

All it took was one meeting between Sofi, Roz, Ziya and myself - and it was set!  We decided to combine Roz’s fashion show idea with the original Tapestry of Dreams event.

In addition, Switchvert will be filming a ready-for-TV documentary about the journeys of each, incredible woman involved.

The end result will be a one-of-a-kind EXPERIENCE which will inspire, encourage and motivate every audience member... as well as support Isibani Community Centre in a number of important ways.
